Skin ointments such as topical immunomodulators (pimecrolimus, tacrolimus) are recommended treatment to help in mild to moderate eczema

Immunosuppressant drugs (cyclosporine, methotrexate, mycophenolate mofetil) could be provided as injections, skin ointments, or pills for the treatment of severe eczema and dermatitis. They work by suppressing the body’s immune response and controlling inflammation. However, they have side effects such as increased blood pressure and kidney problems.

Antihistamine drugs may be prescribed as nighttime treatments to relieve itching for patients of eczema and dermatitis. These treatments usually have a sedative effect.

Systemic corticosteroid medications are suggested as remedies for severe eczema and dermatitis. These are immediate treatments for rashes with an almost immediate effect. However, these could have serious side effects including skin damage and bone loss. Therefore, these are used only for very short periods in eczema and dermatitis treatment.
