The August recall of Avaira Toric contact lenses has now been expanded to include Avaira Sphere contact lenses, according to its manufacturer.
The lenses are being pulled due to possible contamination with silicone oil residue, which has been linked to blurred vision, eye injuries, and severe pain.
Subject to the recall are about 5 million Avaira Sphere lenses shipped to consumers. CooperVision Inc. says it has reached out to those affected.
Consumers with problems or questions related to the recalls should call the firm at 1-855-526-6737.
The Food and Drug Administration issued a Class I warning – in which there may be serious health consequences or death -- about the products and advises consumers to stop wearing the affected lenses. The agency has received 40 reports of problems with CooperVision lenses as of late October.
Avaira Toric users have reported symptoms ranging from hazy vision and pain to severe injuries, including torn corneas, requiring emergency medical treatment.
