Using electronic and digital devices for an extended period can also fatigue the vision. Digital devices include smartphones, video games, or computer games. Constant exposure to bright light can cause eye fatigue. Similarly, trying to see things in dim light can also lead to eyestrain. Symptoms of this fatigue may include the following eye conditions apart from the pain in shoulder, back and neck:
  • Watering
  • Dryness
  • Soreness
  • Irritation
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty in focusing
  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
Methods to Avoid Eye Fatigue

Changes in lifestyle and habits can prevent eye fatigue. There are a number of ways to avoid computer eye fatigue. Some of these are listed below:
  • Computer glasses: Computer glasses are specially designed to look at the computer screen. These glasses are anti-reflective and protect the eyes from strain.
  • Blink frequently: One should blink frequently to prevent strain on the eyes. This also helps in preventing dryness. Lubrication through rinsing with water or eye drops can be helpful as well.
  • Take Breaks: Constantly working on a computer for a long time can cause strain. Hence, take appropriate breaks after every 15 minutes or look away from the screen if possible. This relieves strain and helps the mind and the eyes relax.
  • Right Lighting: Ensure proper light in the room to prevent strain as well as fatigue. An extra bright or high-contrast screen is harsh on the vision while studying and reading. Ensure ambient lighting of screen and surroundings. This is soothing for your sight and prevents strain.

  • Proper Positioning: Placing the computer 20 to 26 inches away from your body can prevent strain. The screen should be kept below the eye level. A tilted and swiveled screen should be preferred. A glare filter can be added as a screen guard.
  • Massage: Massaging the eyes daily and during long stints in front of the computer is recommended to prevent strain. Gently massaging the area around the eyes for around 10 seconds is beneficial. It stimulates the tear glands and prevents dry eyes. It relaxes the muscles and prevents strain.
