The study, by the Hamilton NeuroRestorative Group at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, found that JSK treatments helped improved motor function, reduced tissue damage, and preserved the structure of neural cells in treated rats. Researchers also found JSK initially reduces inflammation, cell death, and boosts local oxygen supply, but over time it also appears to restore function and promote tissue regeneration.
 

 

Although Chinese herbal medicines have long been used for many ailments, few modern-day controlled scientific experiments have been found to uphold practitioners’ claims that they are effective, the researchers said.
 

"A number of anecdotal reports from Chinese medicine practitioners indicate that treatment with a novel herbal formulation, JSK, for periods of one week or three months improved functional recovery," said lead investigator Shucui Jiang, M.D. "Our present study provides an important and necessary foundation for further studies of JSK."
 

Jiang and colleagues said the new research indicates JSK targets multiple biochemical and cellular pathways that may help protect against traumatic injuries as well as subsequent secondary injuries that evolve over time.
 

JSK ingredients include ginseng, Rhizoma (chuan xiong), Glycyrrhizae Radix (gan cao), Paeoniae Alba Radix (bai shao) and Cinnamomi Cortex (rou gui).
