What Are the Causes of Blood Clots?

Tuesday, 04 March 2014 09:56 PM EST

Blood clots are natural life savers. But disorders in this process can rapidly make it harmful for life. Bleeding starts when there is an external mild injury or cut. In some time, the blood flow stops with the forming of blood clots. This is the natural repair process of blood vessels, primarily catalyzed by the proteins and platelets in the blood. Here, the platelets are vital for the clotting process. However, in case there is internal injury entirely or majorly damaging of the blood vessel, the thrombus (blood clots inside the blood vessel) starts appearing. It affects the body quite seriously and requires immediate treatment to avoid grave health issues. Often, disorders in lungs or the brain occur due to extensive blood clotting inside the blood vessels of the respective organs. Therefore, blood clotting that occurs beyond the requirement of natural repair of damaged blood vessels may be hazardous and cause many adversities including brain or lung disorders and cause serious danger to sensitive body parts such as the eyes, urinary tract, or legs.

Symptoms of Blood Clots in the Three Crucial Organs – Disorders Affecting the Brain, Lungs, and Heart
  • Brain: When the thrombus is in the brain, its hazardous nature is identified by common symptoms like headache, difficulty in maintaining balance, and problems in swallowing.
  • Lungs: A blood clot causes disorders in the lungs if the symptoms include difficulty in breathing even during rest.
  • Heart: Thrombus causes a fatal condition and leads to death if any vein or artery is blocked and blood flow becomes stagnant in the heart. Common symptoms to identify blood clots in the heart include shortening of breath, vomiting, and nausea.
Causes of Blood Clots Leading to Disorders in the Brain, Lungs, and Heart
  • Causes of blood clots in the brain: In case any clots form in the blood vessels in the neck responsible for arterial blood supply to the brain, there might be blood in the brain due to restricted blood circulation and oxygen deficiency. Patients of diabetes might suffer from such brain clots. Thrombus also occurs in the brain due to smoking, high cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure.

  • Causes of blood clots in the heart: An irregular or rapid movement in the upper chamber of the heart causes blood to pool and coagulate, forming the thrombus. In many cases, congestive heart failure also causes blood clots in the cardiac tissue. Many people become prone to blood clots after a serious heart surgery.

  • Causes of blood clots in the lungs: In case any thrombus reaches the pulmonary artery via the bloodstream, then blood clots might remain stuck there and cause hazardous symptoms and disorders in the lungs as the clots restrict blood from reaching the lungs.

These various causes of blood clots can help you understand thrombus affecting the heart, lungs, and brain to be alert against disorders to these vital organs.

Thrombus is the thickening of liquid blood and its transforming into solid form inside the blood vessel. It is helpful in repairing injured blood vessels in the body. However, when blood coagulation occurs apart from the natural repair process, it might be dangerous and may cause hazardous symptoms.
