In an effort to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies in January, a British agency is offering free packs of emergency contraceptives in December. There are more unplanned pregnancies in January than any other time of year, says the country’s leading pro-abortion agency.

The morning-after pill is taken after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.

In order to take advantage of the offer, women need to fill out an online form and a nurse will call to check their medical history and to explain how the contraceptive works.

“Sometimes women worry that requesting the pill in advance makes it look like you are planning on taking chances,” says Tracey Forsyth, the lead contraceptive nurse for British Pregnancy Advisory Service.

Pro-life campaigners disagree. “If a woman has the morning-after pill at home ‘just in case,’ she may be more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior than she would normally, particularly over the festive period with the associated increase in alcohol consumption,” said Michaela Aston, a spokewoman for the charity LIFE.
