Does the Weather Affect Asthma?

Friday, 07 March 2014 01:42 AM EST

Shortening of breath, chronic cough, and congestion in the chest are the most distressing things people suffer from asthma. When these signs appear, immediate treatments become imperative. The symptoms of asthma appear with the inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which leads to narrowing of the airways. Allergy triggers are primary causes of asthma. However, irritant triggers also elicit asthma signs. Seasonal pollen and molds are two major allergens causing this chronic illness. Extreme weather conditions are also irritant triggers contributing in developing this illness.

Exercises, medications, bronchodilators help in controlling the signs of asthma. Regular exercise, proper diet, and avoiding smoking can be effective preventive treatments.

Weather Increases Signs

Changes in the weather or seasons usually create harsh conditions requiring visiting doctors for asthma signs. In some cases, a sudden extreme seasonal change acts as the triggering factor to cause chronic illness. Such seasonal triggers are termed irritants. However, seasonal irritants worsen the already inflamed bronchial tubes in an asthmatic person.

The humid summer climate can cause severe asthma signs. When sunlight, heat, and carbon dioxide combine, they worsen the chronic illness. These attacks are painful signs faced by the victim. Strong wind and thunderstorms also have their role among seasonal irritants.

Winter’s extreme cold also makes a person suffer from this bronchial tube inflammation and causes asthma signs. It is advisable to keep the mouth closed while breathing in the cold weather and opting for natural nasal breathing.

Apart from irritants, the seasonal allergens play a critical role in growing asthma. Such allergens give rise to signs of asthma allergy. Seasonal pollens and mold spores are the two widely known seasonal allergens for asthma caused by seasonal pollen or mold allergy. Sudden seasonal change can cause asthma allergy due to large pollen counts in the environment. In this case, overexposure to the seasonal allergens like pollen or molds can worsen the chronic condition of asthma. For these, it is advisable to remain indoors and avoid outdoor activities like exercises. It is also recommended that patients keep the home environment clean by using HEPA filters for purifying dust mites, bacteria, and other allergens that cause seasonal asthma allergy.

Preventive Measures and Treatments for Attacks Caused by Seasonal Changes
  • Wear woolen clothes in winter and keep the mouth covered to protect against cold air.
  • Avoid doing exercises and other outdoor activities in times of high pollen counts.
  • Keep a rescue inhaler with you. Rescue treatments are essential.
  • Combined action of long-acting bronchodilator and inhaled steroids medications act as the best treatments for asthma.
  • Injection of epinephrine and prednisone drugs are often effective treatments for treating asthma triggers.

Exercise as a Remedy

Exercises can actually help you fight the disease. Though exercises can cause chest tightening and congestion in patients, prescribed exercises for asthma can bring significant reduction in the signs of the chronic illness. Thus, exercising can be counted as one of the effective treatments.

Sufferers opting for treatments using exercise must take expert advice and start exercises to strengthen the respiratory muscles, improve the ability to utilize oxygen, decrease shortness of breath, increase lung functioning, and decrease airway sensitivity, all of which help prevent attacks. Thus, exercise can be taken as one of the best treatments for this condition.
