A new heart disease and cancer-fighting strain of broccoli, called Beneforte, has gone on sale in England.
The vegetable looks the same as regular broccoli but has higher levels of the disease-preventing nutrient glucoraphanin.
Studies have shown that men who eats lots of broccoli have a reduced risk of prostate and bowel cancers. Other research show it can also help prevent heart attacks and stroke.
Beneforte contains three times the amount of glucoraphanin as normal strains of broccoli.
Professor Richard Mithen, part of the British team that developed the vegetable, said: “Our research has given new insights into the role of such vegetables for health and can lead to potentially more nutritious varieties of our familiar vegetables.”
Benefort is expected to eventually be available in the U.S.
