Anxiety or Panic Disorder: Is it Inherited?

Saturday, 08 March 2014 11:16 PM EST

Panic disorder or extreme anxiety is a severe mental illness caused when symptoms grow due to various factors contributing to these attacks and disorders including phobia.

Depression is among the most common mental illnesses affecting a growing number of people these days. Patients suffering from mental depression, or a condition like bipolar disorder, or any other form of psychological ill health often exhibit anxiety and panic attacks. Though many factors cause panic disorders or anxiety, anxiety is often inherited.

Depression and Anxiety

Depression and panic attacks can be encountered by anyone at any time. However, not everyone might face the chronic phase of depression and anxiety. Depression is among the most common form of mental illness, which results in numerous panic attacks. Though depression and panic disorders are confused, they are different concepts. Depression is caused with the sudden death of loved ones or any such experience that might cause a patient to feel listless. Anxiety is caused mainly due to extended extreme fear and feeling threatened. Most chronic depressions including bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder cannot be completely cured. However, all kinds of anxiousness can respond to treatment.

Symptoms

Among the most common symptoms of panic disorder or anxiety, the most studied symptoms include excessive anxiousness, rapid heartbeat, hyperventilation, dizziness, and a sense of worry and panic. These symptoms differ from the symptoms of depression as a whole.

Causes of Panic Disorder and Whether it is Inherited

Panic disorder is mainly considered hereditary. However, there are many other causes for panic disorders and symptoms of attacks. Some of the other known causes include:
  • Excessive stress since childhood
  • Trauma
  • Personal weakness and weak character
  • Poor upbringing
  • Combination of certain environmental conditions and changes in the brain.
Let us focus on the main causes of panic disorder:
Panic disorder and symptoms like panic attacks or severe mental episodes are chiefly considered results of family conditions. Largely, there is a view that anxiety can be taken as inherited.

Many research studies depict that anxiety and panic disorders are mainly inherited. Parents having anxiety may give birth to children affected by symptoms. However, it is also not correct to always blame parents for the growth of this mental disease as anxiety can also be due to other causes including traumatic experiences.

However, family history does play a vast role in anxiety. When we talk of inherited anxiety, a particular set of your inherited genes may have resulted in predisposing you towards developing panic disorder and resulting is panic symptoms.

Dominant and recessive genes are the most studied reason behind inherited anxiety. There are possibilities that the parents might not have panic disorder, yet either of the parents may have the recessive genes for this mental illness that may pass on to the progeny as the dominant gene predisposing a child towards the anxiety.

Fortunately, such inherited anxiety and disorders are treatable with proper training. One needs to know the best treatment for the particular kind of anxiety affecting a patient and follow its treatment.

For depression anxiety symptoms, prescribed medications, psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and following a healthy diet and lifestyle can effectively control the panic attacks.
