Sneezin’ Season Has Arrived

Tuesday, 20 March 2012 09:28 AM EDT

Spring allergy season has arrived with a vengeance in many parts of the country, with pollen counts hitting highs throughout the Southeast and parts of the South West.
Atlanta, the nation’s unofficial Pollen Capital, broke records on Tuesday, with the Atlanta Allergy and Asthma Clinic reporting a sneeze-inducting level of 9,369 particles of pollen per cubic meter of air.
Air quality trackers who log nationwide pollen counts for the website Pollen.com also reported very high pollen counts from Florida to Virginia, and extending west to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana.
In addition, high pollen counts were logged in parts of Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nevada, California and Arizona.

About 1 in 5 Americans million suffer from allergies. Over-the-counter treatments such as Allegra, Claritin and Zyrtec can ease symptoms. Doctors can also prescribe nasal sprays, antihistamines and steroidal sprays.
