Survey: Airport Food Gets Healthier

Wednesday, 21 December 2011 09:51 AM EST

The majority of restaurants at large U.S. airports now include low-fat, high-fiber, heart-healthy options, a new study finds.

The survey found that 83 percent of restaurants at 15 major U.S. airports have at least one low-fat, cholesterol-free vegetarian offering – up from just 57 percent of restaurants a decade ago.

“There’s certainly a higher demand for healthier options, and restaurants are attempting to meet that demand,” said Susan Levin, nutrition education director for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, the group that conducted the survey.

“And while some restaurants might be still a little confused about what a healthy meal looks like, at the very least they are trying more and more every year,” she added.

Detroit’s Metropolitan Wayne County Airport was ranked the best for healthy fare, and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport ranked the worst. Charlotte-Douglas International Airport showed the most improvement, with 81 percent of its airport restaurants offering healthy eats, up from 72 percent in 2010.
