A common cause of sudden and more extensive hair loss in young women is the period after giving birth.
When we have a baby, our hormone balance shifts dramatically and the hormones we had in massive quantities when the fetus was growing in our womb must suddenly decrease once the baby is born in order to protect us, the moms.
If the hormone levels didn’t drop, we would become seriously ill and hair loss would not only happen naturally but it could signal much deeper problems.
For most women though, hormone levels drop back to pre-pregnancy levels and the stressors of having a new baby set in — sleepless nights, breastfeeding, and the rebalancing of weight and general metabolism.
This contributes to a normal shedding of hair around the third month after childbirth. It lasts a few weeks or months, and if hormone levels and diet, exercise, and sleep routines are in healthy balance, your hair will return to its beautiful state.
In fact, some of my patients swear that the combination of prenatal vitamins and the postpartum period after hair loss stops leaves them with hair that is more abundant and radiant than before they were pregnant. That could explain why so many women who aren’t pregnant are taking prenatal vitamins.
There are no scientific studies to affirm or deny the connection, so for now women who take prenatal vitamins do so with the hope they will help give them healthier hair.
