Caffeine: The Energy Killer

Erika Schwartz, M.D By Friday, 11 November 2016 04:12 PM EST Current | Bio | Archive

Caffeine offers a false promise when it comes to boosting energy. Although so many people rely on coffee and caffeine-laden sodas and energy drinks, the surge is often short-lived.

Caffeine raises heart rate and increases energy production, but only does so for a short period of time.

After its effects wear off, you feel drained and worse than before.

Caffeine is a powerful diuretic, which means it leaves you dehydrated — a serious robber of energy.

In fact, consuming caffeine is like stepping on the gas pedal without fuel in the engine.

Drinking caffeine will never make up for lack of sleep, exercise, and stress management.

You are much better off addressing your overall health, cultivating habits that keep you refreshed and avoiding the things that push you to “quick fixes” such as caffeine.
