When the planet Mercury is in retrograde, it seems to stop in the sky and then change direction, moving away from us (this is the time when astrologers warn against making any big decisions). But it's an illusion, because Mercury moves in a shorter orbit around the Sun than Earth does.
So saying that Mercury is in retrograde may be a misnomer, but we'd like to think that when it comes to our food supply, having the neurotoxin mercury in retrograde is a solid fact.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, the availability of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has skyrocketed 10,673 percent since 1970! It triggers reactions in your body that are associated with developing obesity, diabetes and bodywide inflammation. But as if HFCS weren't already poisonous enough, until around 2009 mercury was found in trace amounts in some HFCS made in America. That's when the EPA mandated that mercury-free technology be used to remove the contaminant.
Is the mercury contamination really gone from HFCS? Well, maybe. HFCS produced outside the U.S. often uses the technology that leads to contamination. And no one seems to be testing imported products containing HFCS (or imported HFCS itself) to see if it's mercury-free or not. And it isn't clear if they've tested all American-made versions, either. So if you haven't been checking food labels to see what contains HFCS and then putting those products back on the shelf, here's one more really good incentive! It should make "No HFCS" a rule at your house, for school lunches and whenever you're eating out.
