Solutions for Swimmers' Dry Skin

Erika Schwartz, M.D By Friday, 21 June 2019 01:54 PM EDT Current | Bio | Archive

I love to swim for exercise, but it dries out my skin. I think it’s the chlorine in the pool. Can you recommend a good lotion?

Aquaphor is a good hydrating solution you can find at any drugstore, but I’d recommend reconsidering your swimming habits so your skin doesn’t get too dry.

Make sure you take a shower as soon as you’re done swimming, and change out of your wet bathing suit immediately.

If possible, speak to the pool-maintenance people and ask if there’s a way to safely lower the amount of chlorine in the water — you’re probably not the only one having issues.

Other tips: Use a swim cap, take omega-3 fish oils, and use skin oils with natural sesame, coconut, or olive oil in them.
