Fad Diets: Recipe for Failure

Erika Schwartz, M.D By Friday, 14 August 2020 02:31 PM EDT Current | Bio | Archive

Have you heard of the cabbage soup diet? Some of my friends swear by it. Do you think it is worthwhile?

I have heard of it, but I am not a fan of fad diets. The cabbage soup diet is a fad diet and unless you plan on eating cabbage soup for the rest of your life, all the weight you lose and more will come right back when you return to your normal eating.

I recommend that you make permanent changes to your present diet if you want to lose weight.

Eliminate processed foods, decrease the amount of starches you eat, and don’t eat any after lunch.

Cut back on animal meats and fried foods, and increase vegetable and water intake.

Eat a variety of foods so you don’t eat the same thing every day. Cut back on portion size.

Use a dessert plate instead of dinner plate and don’t eat seconds. Learn to be satisfied with a little less.

Your body will thank you and you will never look for another fad diet.
