Tips for Minimizing Wrinkles

“If you don't have wrinkles, you haven't laughed enough,” said funny woman Phyllis Diller, who was known for her cackling laugh, big personality, and later in life, her wrinkles.

Those lines and creases that appear around the eyes, chin, and forehead (and elsewhere) are a natural part of aging, as skin thins and fewer nutrients are delivered to the dermis (the outer layer of skin).

Fortunately, there are ways to minimize them:

• Eat antioxidant-rich foods like leafy greens and berries, and foods with healthy fats, such as salmon, avocados, and nuts. One recent pilot study found that eating two 1-ounce servings of almonds daily for 16 weeks reduced wrinkle width by 10% and severity by 9%.

• Deliver vitamin C directly to the skin (at night only; daytime vitamin C is oxidized by the sun and adds wrinkles) with enriched creams, serums, and patches. Be sure to wash beforehand with a non-soap cleanser, and finish with a fragrance-free moisturizer.

• Get 150+ minutes of aerobic exercise weekly. Increased blood flow to skin delivers needed oxygen and nutrients.

• Skip added sugars and refined carbohydrates because they trigger the release of insulin, a hormone that leads to body-wide inflammation that includes your skin.

• Avoid direct sunlight. Ninety percent of aging signs are due to sun exposure. Use micronized zinc oxide sunblock (at least 30 SPF) on your face daily.

In addition, understand that the skin is 64% water, so staying well hydrated will help keep it in its best shape.
