Weight-Loss Surgery Boosts Sex Life

By    |   Tuesday, 02 June 2015 03:41 PM EDT

Bariatric surgery can boost more than weight loss. New research shows surgery that helps patients shed pounds can also boost their sex lives.

The research, published in the journal Obesity Surgery by East Carolina University, shows bariatric surgery tends to lead to greater intimacy between patients and their partners, and helps light a spark in the bedroom.

The findings are based on interviews with 10 couples about the effects of the weight-loss surgery that one of the two underwent.

Lead researcher Mary Lisa Pories said the couples reported more post-operative energy, more positive moods, better self-esteem, greater intimacy and affection, and improvements in their sexual relationships.

"All of the couples felt their post-operative success was due to a joint effort on the part of both members of the couple," says Pories.

She said a better understanding of how bariatric surgery impacts the dynamics of a couple's relationship may help physicians support patients and their partners more effectively.
