Police, Firefighters Top List of Most-Obese Workers

Thursday, 18 December 2014 01:42 PM EST

The cliché of policemen hanging around doughnut shops may not be too far off base, according to the results of a recent study that found policemen have the highest rates of obesity of any profession in the United States.

According to the study, which was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, almost 41 percent of cops are obese, and their high obesity rates are shared by firefighters and security guards.

Clergy, counselors, and social workers took second place in the obesity sweepstakes, according to an article in the Daily Mail, with 35.6 percent scoring an average body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, which was the definition of obese used in the study.

Perhaps surprisingly, some sedentary professions often associated with obesity, such as truckers, came down the list in fifth position.

The slimmest workers included scientists and psychologists — only 14.2 percent of their ranks are obese, and other lean professions include artists and reporters.
