Anti-Gluten Pill Makes Foods Safe for Celiac Sufferers

Wednesday, 22 July 2015 02:29 PM EDT

A new pill may help people on gluten-free diets chow down on pasta, pizza, and other foods containing the protein in wheat and other grains.

Researchers at the University of Alberta have developed a pill using egg yolk antibodies that helps coat gluten, allowing it to pass through the intestines without doing any damage in people with Celiac disease who cannot tolerate gluten, Fox News reports.

“My friend is celiac. We haven’t had any entertaining with beers. So that’s why I developed this pill – for my friend,” Hoon Sunwoo, an associated professor of pharmaceutical sciences, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Celiac disease sufferers who take Sunwoo’s pill five minutes before eating have a one-to-two hour window of eating foods they typically avoid, the CBC reported.

Researchers expect to begin clinical trials with the pill in 2016.
