Could a pill one day provide the same benefits as exercise?
Scientists at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital say they have taken what they are describing as "the first step toward a pill that can replace the treadmill" for the control of obesity.
In new research at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, scientists identified two compounds that they hope to test in clinical studies that they say could provide some of the same benefits as working out to the functioning of human cells.
Of course, the researchers say any medicines developed from those compounds would not provide all the additional benefits of exercise.
Chad Cowan, an HSCI faculty member and his team report that they have created a system using human stem cells to screen for compounds that have the potential to turn white, or “bad,” fat cells into brown, or “good” fat cells that naturally burn calories.
