Chipotle to Stop Serving Genetically Modified Food

By    |   Monday, 27 April 2015 04:07 PM EDT

Chipotle Mexican Grill has stopped serving genetically modified ingredients in any of its tacos, burritos, or other foods. In a first for a major restaurant chain, Chipotle’s 1,800 restaurants nationwide on Monday began serving only food that is free of genetically engineered ingredients.

The move is the latest example of how restaurants, manufacturers and the food industry are trying to meet consumer expectations for what are at least perceived to be healthier food choices.

PepsiCo also said this week it is removing aspartame from Diet Pepsi. Kraft is dumping artificial dyes from its Mac & Cheese. Nestle is no longer adding fake colorings and flavorings to its chocolate candies. And Tyson Foods is phasing out its use of human antibiotics in chicken feed.

“This is another step toward the visions we have of changing the way people think about and eat fast food,” said Steve Ells, founder and co-chief executive of Chipotle, The New York Times reports.

“Just because food is served fast doesn’t mean it has to be made with cheap raw ingredients, highly processed with preservatives and fillers and stabilizers and artificial colors and flavors.”
