When it comes to healthy alcoholic beverages, wine gets all the press and beer gets a bad rap. But some ales, lagers, pilsners, and stouts don’t deserve that bad reputation, and a few even have high levels of fiber and antioxidants, and are low in calories.
New research conducted by Italy's Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura, for instance, has found that moderate beer drinking -- a little more than a pint per day -- decreases drinkers' risk of heart disease by 31 percent (the same as moderate consumption of wine).
A second study, published in the
Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, found moderate consumption of beer reduces the risk of developing kidney stones by 41 percent and is a natural source of vitamin B12 and plant-based phytonutrients (from the barley and hops).
But some brews are better than others, from a health standpoint. A new ranking, by
Details identifies the 10 beers with the highest health value, just in time for football season.
