When it comes to healthy alcoholic beverages, wine gets all the press and beer gets a bad rap. But some ales, lagers, pilsners, and stouts don’t deserve that bad reputation, and a few even have high levels of fiber and antioxidants, and are low in calories.

New research conducted by Italy's Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura, for instance, has found that moderate beer drinking -- a little more than a pint per day -- decreases drinkers' risk of heart disease by 31 percent (the same as moderate consumption of wine).

A second study, published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, found moderate consumption of beer reduces the risk of developing kidney stones by 41 percent and is a natural source of vitamin B12 and plant-based phytonutrients (from the barley and hops).

But some brews are better than others, from a health standpoint. A new ranking, by Details identifies the 10 beers with the highest health value, just in time for football season.

No. 1: Pacifico. This Mexican pilsner has just 135 calories (less than a can of soda) and 12 grams of carbs per bottle, but is better tasting than light beers and has a higher alcohol content (4.5 percent).

No. 2: Guinness Draught. This Irish stout has only 128 calories, 11 grams of carbs, and 4.2 percent alcohol. Like most dark beers, Guinness is also a good source of fiber, with approximately 3.5 grams, as compared with the 2 grams found in lighter beers.

No 3: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. This hoppy ale is loaded with phytochemicals, has a higher alcohol content than many beers(5.6 percent), yet is still relatively low in terms of calories and carbs (175 and 14.1 grams, respectively).

No. 4: Samuel Adams Light Lager. This flavorful Boston brew has 119 calories and 9.7 grams of carbs, and a higher alcohol content – 4 percent – than other light beers.

No 5: Abita Purple Haze. Brewed with fresh raspberries, this lager is loaded with antioxidants, has an alcohol content of 4.2 percent, and just 145 calories and 11 grams of carbs.

No 6: Left Hand Good Juju. This ale is made with fresh ginger, which aids in digestion and is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties. It's also on the lower-cal end: 131 calories, with 4.5 percent alcohol.

No. 7: Yuengling Lager. This traditional amber lager has 135 calories, with 4.4 percent alcohol.

No. 8: New Belgium Sunshine Wheat.
This American pale wheat ale is big on flavor, but has only 145 calories per serving, with 4.8 percent alcohol, and 13 grams of carbs.

No. 9: Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA. This hoppy IPA has a high alcohol content (7.10 percent), but is still relatively moderate in terms of calories (just 188 per bottle).

No. 10: Deschutes Chainbreaker White IPA. For a Belgian IPA with a relatively high alcohol content (5.6 percent), this brew is surprisingly low in carbs (10.8 grams), with a moderate calorie count (180 per serving).
