Natural Strategies to Prevent Heart Disease

David Brownstein, M.D. By Wednesday, 14 May 2014 01:15 PM EDT Current | Bio | Archive

Heart disease does not develop due to a deficiency of statin drugs. In fact, heart disease is caused by many factors, all of which are linked to inflammation.

What causes inflammation? It can come from eating a poor diet, dehydration, nutritional deficiencies, infections, and hormonal imbalances. All of these conditions can set the stage for many inflammatory illnesses, including heart disease.

I have gotten good results with my patients by addressing the underlying causes of inflammation. A large part of this is achieved simply by eating a good diet.

Foods that contain refined sugar, flour, and salt are pro-inflammatory. On the other hand, eating food that comes from organic sources will have anti-inflammatory characteristics. For instance, it is best to avoid refined carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, and cereal.

My book, The Guide to Healthy Eating, is a good resource to help improve your diet.

Another step in preventing heart disease is to maintain good hydration. The majority of sick patients I see are chronically dehydrated, which leads to thickened blood that can damage arteries as the blood is pumped at high pressure.

How much water should you drink? Take your weight in pounds and divide by two. That number is the amount of ounces of water to drink per day. It is also important to correct nutritional deficits. Our food supply is woefully lacking in basic nutrients such as:

• Iodine

• Magnesium

• B vitamins

• Vitamin C

• Zinc

A deficiency of any of these nutrients can lead to heart disease. Yet I have found iodine deficiency occurring in more than 96 percent of my patients.

Likewise, I’ve seen vitamin B12 and vitamin C deficiency in more than 50 percent of my patients, and thiamine deficiency in more than 30 percent.

Finally, in order to prevent becoming a cardiac patient, it is important to have your hormonal system in proper balance. The relationship between thyroid deficiency — also called hypothyroidism — and heart disease has been written about for more than 100 years. It is well-established that hypothyroidism causes atherosclerosis. I have written about this in my book, Overcoming Thyroid Disorders.
