Take Tooth Problems Seriously

David Brownstein, M.D. By Wednesday, 22 November 2017 01:29 PM EST Current | Bio | Archive

To understand why root canals are problematic, it’s important to understand what a root canal procedure actually entails.

Teeth have soft cores called dental pulp. This core extends from just under the top of the tooth to the marrow of the jaw bone.

A decayed or damaged tooth can develop an infection in the pulp, which can lead to an abscess in the tooth or the jaw bone.

I have felt the pain of an infected tooth — it’s not pleasant. In fact, it was one of the most painful things I have ever experienced.

Symptoms include severe jaw pain, headaches, fever, weakness, dizziness, and fatigue.

In addition to those symptoms, an untreated tooth infection can lead to serious conditions including sepsis, bone loss, heart attacks, and even death.

Make no mistake, an abscessed tooth needs to be taken seriously.

Before the advent of modern dentistry, many people died from abscessed teeth. Thankfully, dentistry has come a long way in treating tooth infections.

Unfortunately, dentists are still performing far toomany procedures that can harm the rest of the body — just like root canals.
