Conventional medicine has little to offer in the treatment of fatty liver disease — that’s why you’ve probably heard hardly a word about this serious illness that is affecting up to one-third of our adult population. Most diabetic medications have failed at reversing the course of the disease.
One medication, metformin, has been shown to improve blood flow to the liver in patients with fatty liver disease. However, other studies have found metformin ineffective.
In truth, metformin should be used only as a treatment of last resort because it leads to vitamin B12 deficiency. The best strategy for reversing the spread of fatty liver disease is to treat the underlying causes. This means, first, addressing America’s obesity epidemic. For the vast majority of overweight and obese Americans, there are safe and effective ways to get rid of the excess weight.
The first step is educating people about the types of food they are eating. Since the 1950s, we have been instructed to make refined carbohydrates — breads, pastas, and cereals — the largest part of our diet. We were told to reduce our fat intake. And as a society, we followed those instructions from the powers that be. What have been the consequences of those recommendations? The result is that Americans are the heaviest people in the world.
The next step to reversing obesity is to change our dietary habits. We need to avoid the whites: sugar, flour, and salt. Foods that contain refined grains are actually devitalized — they lack basic minerals and vitamins.
Eating devitalized food leads to a devitalized body. Furthermore, these devitalized foods often have toxic chemicals added. When the body is deficient of basic nutrients it goes into a state of stress.
Stress due to nutrient imbalances creates a cascade of effects resulting in an imbalanced hormonal system (causing thyroid and adrenal issues), a reduced metabolism, and inflammation.
The end result is that the body actually puts on fat to survive the imbalances it senses. The liver is the body’s main filter. Taxing it by ingesting too many bad foods will leave the liver in a state of stress and inflammation.
A nutritional approach to correcting these imbalances can reverse the course of fatty liver disease. Once again, you must limit intake of refined carbohydrates. Avoid the whites and eat whole foods such as organic fruits and vegetables, animal products, nuts, beans, and seeds.
Finally, it is important to drink enough water. I have often written about the importance of proper hydration, but how much water should you drink? Take your weight in pounds, divide by two and the resulting number is the amount of water to ingest in ounces. It is nearly impossible to reverse fatty liver if you are dehydrated.
