A Republican saddled with the email scandal surrounding Hillary Clinton could never be elected president, former Vice President Dick Cheney tells Newsmax TV.

"I doubt they would be allowed," Cheney said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

Cheney, who served as the nation’s second in command under President George W. Bush, said Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state to relay classified information is "very, very serious."

"Senior positions in the government as vice president, secretary of state, secretary of defense, they deal all the time with highly, highly classified information," Cheney said.

"And the notion that somehow you've got a server out there some place that's not even in a secure environment then the possibility of shipping classified material in the form of emails is very, very serious.

"In the government, we take that kind of problem very, very seriously and she has to, too."

Cheney and his daughter Liz, are co-authors of the new book, "Exceptional: Why the World Needs a Powerful America,” published by Threshold Editions.
