Most Expensive Home in America Lists at $190M

The most expensive property in America has opened its doors for a photo shoot to entice potential buyers to the 12-bedroom Connecticut mansion on 50 acres currently listed for $190 million.

Copper Beech Farm in Greenwich, Conn., was put on the market in recent weeks through realtors David Ogilvy & Associates by timber tycoon John M. Rudey, the Daily Mail reports.

The 15,000-square-foot house was built in 1896. It still has the original speaking tubes that were used in the days before electricity, as well as sleeping porches that were used to cool off on a hot day before the invention of air conditioning.

The mansion has more than a mile of waterfront property. It comes with luxuries such as a heated pool, tennis court, solarium, wine cellar, formal garden, and two islands just offshore.

"The grand-paneled entrance room and stairway rise three stories with a fireplace and goes front to back to the wonderful screened or glassed porch with open panoramas of Long Island Sound," the listing describes.

"The main rooms have 12- foot ceilings, including the living room with a beautiful carved fireplace and French doors to the huge solarium with a coffered ceiling with plaster detailing and three exposures, the paneled library with a fireplace, a huge bow window with curved glass and bookcases, and the dining room with a fireplace, a tracery ceiling and paneling in rick oak with columns," said the listing.

According to David Ogilvy, initial appraisals had the property at well over $200 million. However, the Greenwich real estate market has suffered since the recession of 2008, and houses there have sold well below the asking price.

The property was once owned by Harriet Lauder Greenway, whose father worked with Andrew Carnegie in the steel industry.
