Trump: Second Debate Is Do or Die for Obama

Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:56 PM EDT

President Barack Obama must make a strong showing in his second presidential debate with GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney or he can kiss his chances for a second term good bye, said billionaire real estate mogul and Romney supporter Donald Trump.

Obama’s critics and supporters have agreed the president performed poorly against Romney during a first debate in Denver.

But expect the president to come out swinging in a second debate.

“I think the president will come out a lot stronger and with more enthusiasm,” Trump told CNBC.

“There’s tremendous pressure on President Obama to perform, and if he doesn’t perform I actually think it’s going to be over because he was so bad in the first debate that people didn’t believe it," he said.

“Romney was getting birdies and Obama was getting double bogeys. He was just not doing well.”

Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden debated more aggressively when he faced off with his Republican challenger, Paul Ryan.

“Say what you want about Biden, whether you liked his debate performance or not, at least he was enthusiastic, it looked like he wanted to be there, but the president didn’t, he looked lost.” Trump said.

“I think there is tremendous pressure for him to perform, more so than Mitt.”

Both candidates will square off in their second debate with even favorable ratings among U.S. registered voters, with 52 percent giving Romney a favorable rating and 51 percent doing likewise with Obama, a new Gallup poll finds.

“The presidential race is about as close as it can be with three weeks to go before Election Day. Obama and Romney are closely matched in voter preferences among both registered and likely voters,” Gallup reported.

“The final days of the long campaign transform it from a marathon into a sprint, and the remaining two candidate debates and the final weeks of in-person and over-the-airwaves campaigning will be important in helping determine the winner.”
