Google’s Schmidt Has ‘No Interest’ in a Cabinet Position

Wednesday, 05 December 2012 01:11 PM EST

Eric Schmidt, Google’s executive chairman and former CEO, is reportedly on the White House’s list of candidates to either replace Timothy Geithner as Treasury Secretary or head up a new position to be coined something along the lines of “Secretary of Business,” according to The Washington Examiner.

Google donated $1.9 million to Democratic campaign efforts prior to November’s elections and has embraced President Barack Obama’s policies, while the administration has been a fan of the California search giant.

“Nobody’s better positioned for a Cabinet job, if he wants one,” a Democratic strategist told The Examiner.

Schmidt, however, has stated he has no plans to consider working for the government.

“I said last time and I’ve said again that Google is my home. I have no interest in working for the federal government,” he told The Wall Street Journal.

Geithner said before Obama’s re-election he was planning to step down, though the White House has said the current Treasury Secretary would stick around into 2013 to help steer the country away from the fiscal cliff, a combination of expiring tax breaks and inbound spending cuts taking effect at the end of this year, which could send the country into a recession if left unchecked by Congress and the White House.

“Geithner has indicated that he will stay on through inauguration and he will be, obviously, a key participant in the negotiations around the so-called fiscal cliff issues,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters in November just after the elections, according to Reuters.
