German Industrial Production Drops in September

Thursday, 07 November 2013 10:09 AM EST

Industrial production in Germany lost momentum in September across most sectors, but analysts say the drop should be short-lived.

The Federal Statistical Office reported Thursday that production of big-ticket items dropped 0.9 percent in September after an upwardly-revised 1.6 percent increase in August.

The agency said the drop was led by a 2.1 percent decline in the production of capital goods and a 1.8 percent drop in the construction sector.

ING economist Carsten Brzeski said the drop should be a "one-off rather than the start of a new trend," noting that industrial orders are on the rise and that industrial production remains up 1 percent on the year.

He says that "in the coming months, the industry should continue its comeback as the backbone of the German economy."
