Sarkozy: Attacks on Italy, Spain Debt Not Justified

Wednesday, 31 August 2011 07:03 PM EDT

The economic fundamentals of Spain and Italy “don’t in any way justify” market attacks against their government debt, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said. Speaking to French ambassadors assembled in Paris, Sarkozy said the euro zone “is not a sick man” and that it has lower public debt and has taken more “effective” steps to tackle its deficits than the U.S. or Japan. He said governments will take all necessary steps to “reinforce the eurozone.”
