After news that the U.S. economy shrank for a second straight quarter, Republicans were quick to slam President Joe Biden and Democrats for trying to redefine a recession.
The country’s economy shrank from April to June at a 0.9% annual pace.
Traditionally, a recession has been defined as two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth.
On Tuesday, White House economic adviser Brian Deese insisted that "two negative quarters of GDP [gross domestic product] growth is not the technical definition of recession."
GOP lawmakers took to social media to blast the administration, Democrats and mainstream media outlets repeating what a recession is and is not.
"The White House, Democrats, and the corporate media can try to change the definition all they want but this is the #BidenRecession," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tweeted.
"Democrats would rather redefine a recession than restore a healthy economy. It's time for a new direction in Washington, DC," House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., tweeted.
"GDP has officially fallen for two consecutive quarters — the classic definition of recession," Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., tweeted. "The Biden administration's twisting of words does not change the reality: Americans are hurting because of Democrats' harmful economic policies."
"Our economy is shrinking while Biden and liberals are spending,” former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley tweeted. "Now, they're changing the definition of 'recession' so they can jam through tax hikes and a spending blowout worth hundreds of BILLIONS. #StopTheSpending"
"It’s official now 2nd quarter of negative economic growth This quarter .9% WE R IN A RECESSION BIDEN DO U GET IT?? (schumer & Manchin too) ur economic policies r crushing Iowa family budgets by $670 a month," Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, tweeted.
"GDP Contracts for Second Straight Quarter as U.S. Economy Enters Recession Territory," Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, tweeted with a National Review story about the GDP.
"Dem policies have helped drive our economy into a recession. At every turn since taking over in Washington, Democrats have ignored warnings & pushed policies that fueled inflation and undermined economic growth. Now American families are footing the bill for their bad decisions," tweeted Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., who joins Grassley, Cornyn, and Scott as members of the Senate Finance Committee.
"This is Joe Biden’s recession. Biden can lie and deflect blame all he wants, but that will not alleviate the pain Americans feel every time they fill up their gas tanks, go grocery shopping, check their retirement savings, or balance their budgets," Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel said in a statement.
"Biden and Democrats are responsible for our shrinking economy, and they're only trying to make it worse."
