Kennedy House Run Could Hurt Brown Senate Race

Tuesday, 17 January 2012 10:57 AM

The likely congressional campaign of Joseph P. Kennedy III in Massachusetts has Democrats excited about the possibility of his run helping to unseat Republican Sen. Scott Brown, according to a column today in the Boston Herald.

Noting that Kennedy is expected to run in a redrawn House district that includes Brown’s home turf, columnist Joe Battenfeld suggested it could boost Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren’s chances of beating Brown, who won the Senate seat held for years by the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in a 2010 special election.

Brown declared then, “This is not the Kennedys’ seat,” Battenfeld wrote in his column Tuesday. The columnist added, however, that 2012 could be “the Year of the Kennedys’ Revenge” if the young Kennedy’s campaign ignites enough enthusiasm to help Warren in her bid to retake the Senate seat for the Democrats.

“With Warren already running even with the Republican incumbent in the polls, even a small wave of Kennedy nostalgia, especially on Brown’s strongest turf, could sweep the Democratic challenger to victory in November,” Battenfeld wrote.

But he said the “the prospect also has Brown supporters fired up about beating a Kennedy for the first time in Massachusetts.”

“It will energize both bases and make it easier for both sides to raise money,” Battenfeld quoted state Republican Rep. Dan Winslow as saying.

According to Battenfeld, Joseph Kennedy has hired Doug Rubin, Warren’s chief political strategist, to help him win the redraw 4th District House seat now located “in the backyard of the man who replaced his great uncle” in the Senate.
