Xinhua: China Can’t Be a ‘Savior’ to Europe

Sunday, 30 October 2011 06:15 PM EDT

China can’t play the role of “savior” to Europe nor provide a “cure” for the region’s malaise, the official Xinhua news agency said in an English- language commentary written by Liu Yue.

The rescue package announced Oct. 27 is just the start of a long and difficult process to solve Europe’s debt crisis for good and more concerted efforts are needed, the commentary said, without identifying Liu’s position at the agency.

Although China’s “active attitude” to the package was well received in Europe, some Westerners failed to fully understand the country’s “good intention,” asserting it would take advantage of the European crisis for its own agenda, the commentary said.

When Europe is in deep crisis, China will not act like an onlooker, Xinhua said. As a “true friend and partner of Europe, China is willing to extend a helping hand and will be happy to see a quick recovery of the European economy,” it said.

A prosperous and stable Europe is important to China’s stability and development, according to the commentary.
