Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said he expects President Donald Trump will make a decision within days on how to respond to China’s crackdown on Hong Kong.
His comments came Wednesday during an interview with Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo.
“This is a very complex situation,” he said. “Our hearts go out to the individual civilians in Hong Kong. We’re with them. But the president will have to decide exactly what’s the appropriate response to it and as you indicated he has said he will do that within the next very, very few days.
“Well, there’s a whole menu of potential things that he can do, and I’m sure they’re working right now on exactly how to refine the thinking and come up with something that’s an appropriate response.”
The U.S. is reportedly considering various sanctions to punish China for its crackdown on Hong Kong.
The administration could impose controls on transactions and freeze assets of Chinese officials and businesses for implementing a new national security law that would curtail rights and freedoms of Hong Kong citizens.
The administration is facing a challenge in striking back at China because any strong penalties would likely also harm both Hong Kong and the U.S.
