Taxes went up for the wealthiest households in this country last year, but apparently not enough to satisfy most Americans.
A total of 55 percent believe that the richest 1 percent of households don't pay enough taxes, according to a
CNNMoney poll. That compares to 25 percent who think the top 1 percent pay their fair share.
You might be surprised to learn that 19 percent maintain that the top 1 percent pay too much taxes.

Interestingly, 61 percent of women believe the top 1 percent don't pay enough, while only 49 percent of men do.
The political breakdown isn't surprising: 77 percent of Democrats think the top 1 percent should pay more taxes, while only 33 percent of Republicans feel that way. The total is 52 percent for independents.
As of 2011, $389,000 of adjusted gross income put households in the top 1 percent. The top income tax rate increased to 39.6 percent last year from 35 percent.
French economist Thomas Piketty has raised a stir with his proposal that rich people pay a wealth tax of up to 10 percent. That suggestion has raised a lot of skepticism from economists.
"I’m the kind of person who doesn’t spend too much time on policy proposals that have zero chance of happening, and I think this is one of those," Joel Slemrod, a University of Michigan tax economist, told
Bloomberg Businessweek.
