The Democrat leadership is purposely trying to hold up a plan to help the economy in order to make President Donald Trump look bad before the U.S. presidential election, economist Stephen Moore said Sunday.

Speaking to host John Catsimatidis on "The Cats Roundtable" radio show on WABC 770 AM in New York, Moore said Democrats “want to defeat Trump so much that they’re willing to have millions of more people on the unemployment line [and] to allow more small businesses to lose their jobs in order to score victory.”

Moore, who advised Trump during his 2016 campaign, added "that’s a cynical thing to think, but when I saw the actions of [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi this week saying no to everything [for a stimulus plan] unless we get $1 trillion, I thought, 'I don’t think she really wants to help the economy right now.'"

Moore said Pelosi is basically saying that “We can’t even do the things we agree on, like helping some of the schools, hospitals and other things that do need financial help [because she] is holding all of that up because she wants the blue state bailout.”

He added that Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer need to “come together for the good of the country.”

Moore insisted that "the good news is that even without the stimulus plan, which has been held up now for eight weeks, the economy is on a great roll [and that] Trump has started to think, 'Well, maybe I don’t even need another stimulus bill. Maybe the private sector is pulling us out of this on its own.'"

Moore said that “Trump wants to get a deal done, but he also recognizes that a bad deal is worse than no deal at all.”
