Poll: Economy Weighs on Voters in Battleground States

The feeling of gloom and doom surrounding the economy persists in the United Sates despite continuing signs of a recovery, a new survey shows.

The Politico poll shows that in battleground states a majority of likely voters blame President Barack Obama for the nation’s financial woes, with 57 percent of them saying they either “strongly” or “somewhat” disapprove of his leadership on the issue.

The poll showed that only 15 percent “strongly approve” of Obama’s handling of the economy, while 27 percent said they somewhat approve.

Only 23 percent of potential voters in the competitive states in the November midterm elections believe that their financial situation has improved, compared to the 30 percent who say it has gotten worse.

The frustration and anger over the state of the country’s economy resulted in 36 percent of voters in the poll saying that the GOP is better suited to handle the economy, according to Politico.

But that figure was matched by the same percentage of people who believe that Democrats are better positioned to continue handling the country’s economy.

Some 28 percent of respondents were undecided on which party should be running the economy.

The poll showed that a majority of Americans, 61 percent, say they do not have enough savings to deal with a sudden loss of the job, while 62 percent of Americans say that the rising cost of basic household items like gas and groceries has put a strain on their finances.

The poll, designed by SocialSphere Inc. and conducted Aug. 29-Sept. 7 by the research firm GfK, consisted of 917 likely voters in competitive House and Senate races, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

Although Politico noted that the economy has marginally improved in recent months, the political news website said that unemployment still remains above 6 percent and that in August the country added just 142,000 jobs.
