More than six months after the coronavirus began to plague the city, over 500,000 New York City residents remain jobless, the New York Post reported.

According to data from the New York Labor Department, 14% or 538,694 of city dwellers were unemployed in September. That number is more than 10 points higher than at the same point last year.

The worst of the pandemic’s impact on jobs was in June, when 20% or 810,177 city residents were unemployed.

“In the seventh month of the coronavirus pandemic, private-sector employment in New York was still recovering more slowly than in other states from the after-effects of the broad spring shutdowns of normal business and social life,” Empire Center for Public Policy's E. J. McMahon said in a blog post after reviewing U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

“The Empire State’s year-to-year decrease was almost double the national decline of 6.9 percent. Only one other state — tourism-intensive Hawaii — was further below its 2019 employment level, with a decline of 21.5 percent,” McMahon said.
