President Donald Trump's lead economic adviser said Thursday the "federal minimum wage is a terrible idea," in an interview with The Washington Post.

Larry Kudlow, the director of the White House's National Economic Council, was asked about Democrats trying to raise the national minimum wage to $15 per hour if they take back the House.

"My view is a federal minimum wage is a terrible idea – terrible idea," Kudlow said. "To force them to kind of take a payroll increase would be silly."

Kudlow added the minimum wage, which currently sits at $7.25 per hour or $16,000 per year for a full-time worker, should depend on the cost of living in each state.

"Idaho is different than New York; Alabama is different than Nebraska," he said. "That's why the federal minimum wage doesn't work for me."

He also said he would "argue against" increasing the minimum wage on a state or local level, though he did praise Amazon for raising its minimum wage to $15 per hour.
