White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow on Sunday said President Donald Trump’s executive order on a $400 a week unemployment bump will be contingent on whether a state can afford it.

In a contentious interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Kudlow was repeatedly pressed on details of the EO by host Dana Bash, who ultimately declared, “it’s a bit confusing.”

According to Kudlow, all the individual states haven’t yet been canvassed on whether they can afford to pony up an extra $100 to trigger the federal government putting up $300.

“I think they will be able to make room. ...We are going to operate on the same principle in the executive order," he said. "We will be repurposing funds from other areas. So based on our estimates, the states will be able to provide the extra $100.”

“Have you checked with the states, how many of the 50 states and D.C. And other territories say that they are going to be able to pony up $100 a week per unemployed citizen?” Bash asked.

“Good question. We'll probably find that out today or tomorrow as we make our canvas. ...But we will be in touch… We'll find out the exact specifics today," Kudlow conceded.

Later, the issue came up again and the number changed, at which point Bash dropped the issue and called it too “confusing.”

“It should be 800 bucks for the unemployment,” Kudlow said, to which Bash asked, “800 or 400?” 

“It should be $800. If the states step up, we're prepared to match, that should come out $400 federal, $400 states,” he said.

“I think this is not what the president said and it's a bit confusing," Bash concluded.

Kudlow also ran into pushback on ABC News’ “This Week,” when host George Stephanopolous asserted the president’s executive order on evictions did not extend a federal moratorium, but only directs how to find a way to help people.

“Well, look that’s not entirely true,” Kramer responded.

“It is true,” Stephanopolous shot back, to which Kudlow conceded it was the “intent” of the executive order to “prevent evictions.”
