Top White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow admitted on Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s proposed 10-percent middle-class tax cut proposal would not happen anytime soon, The Hill reported.

Kudlow made the comments after the president repeated his claim on Monday that Republicans plan to unveil a middle-class tax cut before the midterm elections, which are in two weeks, CNBC reported.

Acknowledging that Congress is in recess until after the midterms, Trump said, “We won’t have time to do the vote. We’ll do the vote after the election.”

Congressional leaders and White House officials have all said they do not know anything about any plans for a tax cut before the election, an idea Trump first mentioned only on Saturday. The officials added that they do not know any of the details of such a proposal.

Kudlow admitted about the plan on Tuesday that “We're working through the Ways and Means, as you have to do in these things. It may not surface for a while. But that's his goal. That's his policy intent. I don't see anything wrong with that."

But Kudlow insisted there is no reason to believe that Trump does not mean what he says.

"Last couple years, promises made, promises kept," Kudlow said. "Take him seriously when he comes out with these things. That's been his pattern for a long time. People should not underestimate that."
