Reagan's Star Shines on Turner Classic Movies

By    |   Wednesday, 11 March 2009 05:17 AM EDT

Ronald Reagan is the “Star of the Month” during March on the Turner Classic Movies network.

Each Wednesday during March, the cable network will feature movies starring America’s 40th president-to-be. Also included will be tributes and rarities from TCM’s film archives.

The tribute started March 4 with eight straight Reagan-starring films, including his four-entry “Secret Service of the Air” adventure series (1939-40). It continues next Wednesday with another batch of selections featuring the Warner Bros. star.

Some of the notable movies in The Great Communicator’s acting career to be featured in March include: “Dark Victory” (1939), which earned Bette Davis an Academy Award; “Knute Rockne — All-American” (1940), which earned him the nickname “The Gipper”; “King’s Row” (1942), which many consider his finest acting performance; and his final film, “Hellcats of the Navy” (1957), which co-starred his wife, Nancy.

Reagan appeared in more than 50 feature films and numerous TV shows, including being host of two anthology series — “Death Valley Days” and "General Electric Theater.”

On the cover of TCM’s monthly magazine, Now Playing, a youthful Reagan is depicted sitting on a fence, which, politically speaking, he rarely did during his later incarnations as California governor and U.S. president.

The magazine’s cover, the March schedule, and more information on Reagan, who pronounced his name Ree-gun throughout his movie and TV career, can be found at www.TCM.com.
