Shutdown Failure Makes the Democrats 0-for-3

Hillary lost the presidential election, Strike One.

Next, they were on the wrong side of the tax bill. According to Townhall.com, by mid-January, 1,000,000 people received bonuses as a result of the legislation. The most significant hit to the Democrats was that Silicon Valley turned on them. Tim Cook, the chairman of Apple, announced that his company was planning to spend $350 billion on new plants and equipment and to hire 20,000 new employees. Cook said it was because of the tax bill. Big Strike Two.

The Third Strike was the decision to shut down the government in order to do something for the Dreamers. The Democrats have been saying that the Dreamers are about 850,000 people, though, according to USA Today, the number is closer to 3.6 million illegals brought here by their parents at a young age. Republicans by and large are not opposed to helping the Dreamers, but the bigger issue is illegal immigration.

The Democrats use the smaller number because small makes the decision seem as if it is no big deal. If the American people find out that the number of Dreamer illegal immigrants is four times that of what the Democrats have said it is, then this becomes a more significant issue for America. This immigration issue is a watershed moment for the Democrats, because if they lose this one, they have nothing to run on in the fall.

I don’t think the Democrats are conscious of the feelings of a great many Americans. On the surface, these feelings may seem unrelated, but I think they are a great indicator of American spirit and pride. Americans protested the NFL and its players for its disrespect of the American flag and the National Anthem. As a result many Americans stopped going to games or watching on television, including the playoffs. The New York Post reported, “NFL ratings in historic decline and no end in sight." Americans are proud of their country. The fact that the Democrats shut down the government because they only wanted to give amnesty to 850,000 illegals in the country is anathema to many Americans.

If one asks Americans to choose between the 850,000 illegal immigrants or paying our men and women in the military, or feeding the poor or providing medical care to veterans, there is no question in my mind the American people will significantly choose to support the military. The issue, in reality, is that the Democrats want open borders, while the citizens in great numbers do not. The president wants more border control; he wants his wall to try and slow down illegal immigration; he wants to try and impact the flow of illicit drugs coming into the country; and he wants to keep America safe. What the Democrats still have not figured out is that what they believe is not what the majority of Americans want.

One of the things that made this country great was the assimilation of legal immigrants into the American culture. The government restricted immigration from late 1920 to early 1960, which gave us, “The period of assimilation.” Two things happened over those 30-plus years. First, we shut down legal immigration, and we required the immigrants here to learn the language, the history, and the laws of America. In many cases after one or perhaps two generations, assimilation was complete. The children learned the language, laws, and the culture of America.

There are estimates that we currently have at least 11 million illegal immigrants in the country. The Federation For American Immigration Reform now estimates that the illegal population is at least 13.6 million. Nobody knows for sure how many illegal immigrants there are in America. One of the reasons some illegal immigrants are opposed to the Democratic position, which seems to be open borders, is that they believe the number could be much more extensive and Americans would be shocked at the much higher numbers and be angry when they find out how much it will cost to take care of them.

If we stay with the Democratic number of 850,000 Dreamers, then the Democrats by forcing the government shutdown are holding 325 million Americans hostage for the sake of 850,000 people who are in this country illegally. I think that is the final strike, You’re Out!
