1. "They Never Let a Crisis Go to Waste: The Truth About Disaster Liberalism" by Jason Chaffetz (Broadside Books). The former GOP congressman from Utah looks at progressive efforts to heighten crises to force their priorities into law. Whether the crisis is legitimate, fabricated, or exaggerated, the solution is always the same: more government, less individual freedom, higher spending, higher taxes, Chaffetz argues, adding that if Americans don’t pay attention, there will be a steady erosion of the freedoms the nation holds dear. (Nonfiction)
2. "Rebellion, Rascals, and Revenue: Tax Follies and Wisdom through the Ages" by Michael Keen and Joel Slemrod (Princeton University Press). A lively history of taxation and how governments struggle to tax effectively and fairly—and often dramatically fail. For example, in 1898 the British ignited a rebellion in Sierra Leone by imposing a tax on huts―and, in repressing it, ended up burning the very huts they intended to tax. There was also an Incan tax payable in lice, and Tsar Peter the Great’s tax on beards, aimed at forcing the nobility to shave, much like today’s carbon taxes aim to slow global warming, according to the authors who say the past successes and failures in taxation hold clues to solving the tax problems of today.(Nonfiction)
3. "The Enemy Within: How a Totalitarian Movement is Destroying America" by David Horowitz (Regnery). The bestselling author of the Humanix book “BLITZ’’ sounds the alarm on the Left’s totalitarian ideology which he says has put America on the brink of becoming a one-party dictatorship. Horowitz, a liberal- turned-conservative activist, also discusses what he calls the Democrats’ "unprincipled campaign" to destroy Donald Trump, the nation’s duly elected president. (Nonfiction)
4. "Hope for This Present Crisis: The Seven-Step Path to Restoring a World Gone Mad" by Michael Youssef (Frontline). Youssef, founder of The Church of the Apostles, argues that the collapse of the Roman Empire occurred in a single generation and was not so much the result of invasions by their enemies but the result of moral decay and internal corruption — and that similar patterns are emerging in America. He says it is essential we stand up to attacks on our faith and defend Christianity. In this book, the author discusses restoring the soul, revitalizing the family, resining the church and respecting our freedoms of ways of getting back on the right path. (Nonfiction)
5. "How to Make a Vaccine: An Essential Guide for COVID-19 and Beyond," by John Rhodes (University of Chicago Press). Rhodes, a former director of strategy in immunology at GlaxoSmithKline who has worked with Dr. Anthony Fauci, tells the story of the first approved Covid-19 vaccines and how scientists discover, test, and distribute them. He also discusses how discoveries today are also empowering scientists to combat future threats to global health, including a recent breakthrough in the development of genetic vaccines, which have never before been used in humans.
