Whereforth Israel?

When the Obama administration abstained in the United Nations rather than veto a resolution on Israel’s settlements it ignored years of precedent since the establishment of that nation in 1948. The UN resolution which allows condemnation of the nation of Israel for its settlements and refusal to relinquish border lines integral to its security bespeaks an a priori condition of any negotiations — recognition of Israels’ right to exist which many Palestinians, Syrians, and others have not accepted.

It is written in the Bible whose first five books are from the Torah for Jews and which is the Word for Christians, “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12:3) This is followed in Isaiah 41:11-12, “Behold all who are incensed against you shall be put to shame and be confounded; those who strive against you shall be as nothing and shall perish.” Aliyah is “going up to Israel” which is part of the Right of Return.

When wars are won the victors have never been required to give back the land, but such is being asked of Israel which if done, leaves its front line naked. Remember the Arab-Israel Six Day War of 1967 was not started by the Jews though in winning, they conquered the surrounding lands which included parts of the West Bank and Sinai Peninsula. The Western Wall, termed the Wailing Wall of Jerusalem, was part of the second Jewish Temple of Herod the Great. It and Jerusalem as the capital of Israel will not be negotiated and are the second part of the understanding which is not being comprehended by those intent on a political solution to what is also a religious right of passage.

There is something about being Jewish which too many have a problem with likely stemming from our designation as “The Chosen People.” During the Nazi siege of their person and efforts to exterminate us as a people, too many refused to give sanctuary and quarter to Jews, including the USA. Israel’s Knesset on July 5, 1950, enacted The Law of Return which was incorporated in the Nationality Law of 1952. This law explicitly declares the right of Jews to come to Israel as an oleh so that we never have to feel we have no place to go when nations turn against us. A better term might be the right of survival.

Over 25 percent of the Nobel Laureates in Science and Mathematics are Jewish. Israel remains the leader in desalination technology. Innovative improvements in capturing electricity generated as cars go over roads or a solar air conditioning system challenging the need for 70 percent of the electricity as is done presently or the fact that 80 percent of the water in Israel is recycled demonstrates this nation’s commitment to works of benefit to the world (Israel-Institute.org). It is appreciated that Israel and Jews are a people chosen to serve our G-d.

A two state solution cannot be dictated to Israel, Syria, or others in that area. Men of good will must be willing to sit down and come to a reasonable solution which at its core must place Israel’s Right to Exist.
