The Coronavirus has brought to the forefront heretofore unappreciated seemingly unconstitutional measures and laws previously established for enactment as needed to maintain society's peace — and order. One poorly understood law is the Police Powers Act, allowing the government to isolate and contain populations in the event of contaminations or spread of infectious agents.
Welcome to New Rochelle, New York’s present experience with the outbreak of the coronavirus there. Within these boundaries it's possible to force immunizations, prevent relocations, and implement other suspensions of civil liberties.
All of these depend on reliable public health installations and a proactive National Guard.
In all the talk about healthcare and Medicare for all, having insurance won’t improve one’s lot in a public health fiasco as that which may be upon us.
A portion of the presidential debates must focus on how to shore up these agencies in times like these.
One of the downfalls of this is the use of the National Guard composed of local citizens to ensure compliance of fellow local citizens in these matters. As was sometimes seen during the Civil Rights Marches of the 1950s using local military citizen force and possibly coercion on neighbors was a tough task.
Secondly, as is now being highlighted by nations, not just our own, screening for health issues must be a part of immigration policy in all areas. Controlling borders and entry is a critical piece of national security and foreign policy.
Those advocating for open borders are subverting the safety of citizens in abandoning this need.
Third and also first are the implications of such massive encroachments on our lives not just in terms of banking, communications, education and food, the further isolation of the poor, imprisoned and unconnected individuals from the internet, all will degrade their ability to be informed and feel secure.
One thing which must be understood is that human nature will dictate when people feel abandoned and neglected without attention to their needs for survival, anarchy will result and violence is not far behind.
Survivalist and other similar organizations have prepared for this day and the rest may find themselves without protection, food, and limited shelter. The importance of the Second Amendment and bearing arms will become paramount and the resistance to taking guns away will only increase.
A reexamination of the Patriot Act, section 215 of the FISA laws and other encroachments on the constitution must occur, for in efforts protecting us from terrorists we forgot to ask who will protect us from ourselves.
The effort to unseat President Trump who was duly elected points out the influence of unelected government officials, corporate big money, the supposed excesses of the deep state and other nefarious imaginings. The question is what is to be done when people don’t do what the dictates of the public’s best interest suggests.
That time may be at hand.
Parents warn children who are misbehaving: don’t let me come in there.
For government, Martial Law is similarly imposed by direct military control of normal civilian functions by the government, often in response to temporary emergencies such as a major disaster; a national emergency, as was seen in Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz tested positive for COVID-19 which exacerbated our attention to this potential for a national disaster. His disregard for his teammates, the fans and the situation warrant a severe restriction on his activities in basketball, even a suspension from the NBA. His actions were like an elbow to the face and without the consequences.
There are far too many who won’t get the message.
Our handshakes must now become elbow bumps.
